1) EVANSTON / NORTHWESTERN AREA EVENT
Former Northwestern professor Alice Dreger will be speaking on Wednesday, September 30 at 6pm at Bookends & Beginnings bookstore, 1712 Sherman Ave., Alley 1 (across from CVS, where Bookman’s Alley was), in Evanston. Dreger will speak about her new book, Galileo’s Middle Finger: Heretics, Activists, and the Search for Justice in Science, and her recent resignation from Northwestern University over the censorship of the journal Atrium (http://academeblog.org/2015/08/25/alice-dregers-letter-of-resignation-at-northwestern/). 2) UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS -CHICAGO / HULL HOUSE EVENTS
Wednesday, September 30th, 7-9 pm, Hull House on the UIC campus: “Defending the University of Wisconsin,” featuring Wisconsin faculty who will share with us what has been happening in Wisconsin. We will then discuss: How can we support our colleagues in Wisconsin? What might be in store for us under a governor who looks to Scott Walker as a role model?
Wednesday, October 28th, 5-8 pm, Hull House on the UIC campus, Joerg Tiede, Professor of Computer Science at Illinois Weslyan and a longtime AAUP leader on issues of faculty governance and academic freedom will make a presentation based on his forthcoming book, titled “University Reform — The Founding of the American Association of University Professors.” The talk will focus on the issue of academic freedom as a key issue at the founding of the AAUP 100 years ago, and also address contemporary issues. Joerg currently serves on AAUP Committee A on Academic Freedom, and in that capacity was part of the AAUP’s investigation into Steven Salaita’s situation at of the University of Illinois that led to the AAUP censuring the University administration last year for violation of Salaita’s freedom of speech.
3) UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS – UC EVENTS
Steven Salaita has a brief book tour of Illinois Oct. 12-13. He is supposed to be speaking at UIC on Oct. 12, but exact details are not yet available. He will also be speaking Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at 7pm at the Independent Media Center (202 S. Broadway, Urbana).
John Wilson (co-editor or Academe blog and editor of Illinois Academe) will be a guest-in-residence at UIUC on Feb 21-5, 2016. A debate/ symposium on the Salaita case will occur during those dates. More details to be released this fall.
