“While almost all heads of universities clear more than six figures, the average part-time professor earns about $20,000 a year.” Alluding to AAUP estimates that “roughly three in four college professors aren’t on tenured tracks,” this article compares the pay gap between presidents and adjunct professors to that between CEOs and workers. “While income inequality in higher education isn’t as high as Chipotle [1,522 to one], it does rival that of other publicly traded corporations, including Nike, IBM, and Motorola.”

“This has been going on for years and years,” said anthropology professor David Hughes, president of the AAUP-AFT faculty union, in a phone interview Thursday. “That’s why faculty is so disillusioned with the athletic department. … Faculty gets treated like second-class citizens when we do important work too, you know?”
President Barchi making his report public was “tremendously important in terms of restoring the reputation of the university. Also, we called for President Barchi to reaffirm academic freedom. He did that,” said AAUP chapter president David Hughes.

Who needs the faculty? A new working paper by the Campaign for the Future of Higher Education, a coalition of faculty unions and other academic associations, asks that question and answers resoundingly that face time with faculty members is key to student success. Unfortunately, it says, colleges and universities continue to divert funds away from instruction in an attempt to cut costs — a strategy that actually hurts them in the long run.
“The resolution asks the board to delay the implementation of the policy, saying it doesn’t meet AAUP standards and is not mentioned in all active job postings. Many of the postings were made before the policy was approved, meaning applicants who have already applied may not be aware of it.”
